American detained on spy charges in Moscow

A US citizen has been detained in Moscow on suspicion of spying, Russia's FSB security service has said.The FSB said American had been detained "while carrying out an act of espionage" on 28 December and that a criminal case had been opened.Its statement identified person in Russian, with AFP news agency saying name appeared to translate as Paul Whelan.No or details were immediately available and US embassy in Moscow has so far not commented.More follows
