PUNE: The district rural police are searching for a woman and her two accomplices for allegedly duping two men from Junnar tehsil after marrying them for money and running away.

A vegetable trader (33) from Narayangaon has filed a complaint against the trio with the police recently.

The police booked the woman and her accomplices under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).According to the complainant, the woman had taken Rs1.3 lakh from him under the pretext of the treatment of her ailing mother.

Within a week of the marriage, the woman escaped from the house of the complainant. An officer from the Narayangaon police told TOI that according to the complainant, a resident of their village introduced him to a woman, who runs a marriage bureau in Nashik district.

The complainant contacted the woman, and the latter shared a photograph of a prospective bride.

“The complainant agreed to marry the woman after discussing the matter with his parents.

He was then sent the Aadhaar card and other details of his would-be wife, who was also from Nashik district,” the officer said. After discussions, the wedding was fixed for May 10.

Before the wedding, his would-be wife and another woman demanded Rs1.3 lakh from the complainant for the bride’s ailing mother, the police said.“The complainant wanted to meet his would-be mother-in-law, but the woman did not allow him to see the ailing woman,” the officer added.Trusting his bride and the woman, the complainant gave Rs1.3 lakh to her on the day of marriage, police said.

“On May 17, the complainant’s wife left home without informing him.

When the complainant contacted the woman from Nashik, the latter told him that his wife had fled with another person and that she would find another bride for him.

She also requested him not to approach the police,” he said. The complainant, while searching for his wife, came to know that a man from his village had also married a woman from Nashik, and his wife, too, was missing.

“He contacted the man and showed him his wife’s photograph.

The man was shocked that the photograph belonged to the woman he had married and had gone missing,” the officer said. The police suspect the involvement of a gang, which may have duped more people using the same modus.

“We are working on some clues,” the officer said.
