BANKURA: A goods train crashed into an empty freight train parked at Ondagram station in Bengal's Bankura around 4am Sunday, derailing and damaging close to 13 wagons in the accident that officials suspect was caused by the driver sleeping at the wheel and jumping the red light.
The driver and his assistant suffered minor injuries.
Two drivers and two chief loco inspectors have been suspended.
The train was said to be moving at speeds above the prescribed limit. The accident happened amid the railway ministry's plans to revise its signal engineering manual to introduce new tech and procedural changes for preventing accidents such as the three-train collision in Balasore on June 2 that killed 292 people."The train on the loop line was empty as it was supposed to be taken away for maintenance and the shunting process was on when the Bishnupur-bound train hit it.
This train was supposed to halt at the home signal and change track to the main line.
The driver failed to notice the red light.
The driver seems to have overshot the signal.
An inquiry has begun," said Manish Kumar, DRM, Adra division. There were reports that the Howrah-Chakradharpur Express, running late by an hour, had a close shave.
Railway officials denied this.
At least eight trains were cancelled.Aditya Kumar Chaudhary, CPRO, South Eastern Railway, said, "The section has now been restored.
Local trains resumed services at 3.15pm."
