KOLKATA: A 77-year-old man—a roof construction contractor by profession—murdered his wife with a sharp weapon at their flat on Monday night before jumping to his death from the roof of the four-storey building.The incident took place at the Nonadanga Balmiki Ambedkar Abasan under Anandapur police station around 9.15 pm on Monday.The woman, Gita Samaddar (61), had been bed-ridden for the past 10 years after being paralyzed since suffering a stroke.Her husband, Amulya Samaddar (77), was her only attendant, battling all financial constraints.A suicide note was recovered from Amulya’s pocket that stated that no one was to be blamed for his death.

He has also stated in the note that he had murdered his wife.Police claimed that Amulya had been a heart patient for several years.

And a couple of days ago, he had consulted a heart specialist, who had advised several tests and asked him to get admitted at the earliest as he had several blocks in his heart.The couple’s two daughters—one settled at Thakurpukur and another at Bansdroni—had come to visit their parents even on Sunday.

In fact, when the incident took place, the eldest daughter had stepped out on some errand, police said.“Amulya, prima facie, was worried over who would look after his wife if he died before her.

He was worried about the finances.

However, we will speak to his daughters, relatives and neighbours before arriving at any conclusion,” said DC (East) Arish Bilal.Neighbours told TOI that Amulya was an extremely caring husband.

“He was warm at heart and never kept his doors shut all through the day.

His daughters had taken him to the doctor last Sunday and since then he had been upset.

His eldest daughter was out of the flat when we heard something heavy fall off.

Initially, we thought that it might a part of the building that had collapsed and went to check.

It was his elder daughter who found out that her father had fallen from the rooftop and rushed him to hospital.

We went upstairs to inform Gita and found the house locked.

It was extremely unusual.
