NAGPUR: Chief Justice of India Dhananjay Chandrachud stated on Saturday that criminalisation of homosexuality, which was decriminalised after over seven years, was one of the lots of stories of oppression in our society.

The CJI was speaking at the first convocation event of the Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU) at its Waranga campus in the city.Former CJI Sharad Bobde, MNLUs founder chancellor, and Supreme Court judge Bhushan Gavai, who is chancellor now, shared the dais along with senior Bombay HC judges Sanjay Gangapurwala (Bombay HC acting chief justice), Sunil Shukre, Atul Chandurkar and Anil Kilor.Maharashtra supporter basic Birendra Saraf and Bar Council of India chairman Manan Kumar Mishra also went to the programme together with HC and district court judges, lawyers and law students. While estimating his landmark judgment in the Navtej Singh Johar case where he held that IPC Section 377 was an anachronistic colonial law that breached the basic rights to equality, flexibility of expression, life and personal privacy, the CJI said he had actually provided his viewpoint with the line that the sleepiness of law appeared once again regardless of the constitutionally ensured right to equality and non-discrimination.

As a governing document, the Constitution has made quick strides towards a more just democratic society, but much work remains to be achieved prior to we can rest.

The deep inequality which fractured our society at the time of Independence continues even today.

The best method to make this inequality a remote imagine the past is to instill the spirit of the Constitution in our society.

In this endeavour, there is no better place than you, my dear students, the CJI said.Stating that the unfortunate nature of law was that it was lethargic and filled with inertia, the CJI stated, You will discover a million reasons, when you prosper as a lawyer and go on to become judges, to be an inert individual.

However sleepiness of law should not be mirrored in you.

When it comes to constitutional worths and nurturing constitutional culture, lead the curve and lead by your own example.

The communities that we develop for ourselves would end up being the backbone of our collective mission for justice.

Explaining the adverse results of social media, CJI Chandrachud, who took over from previous CJI Uday Lalit, said of late people were residing in a significantly disconnected world in spite of being linked more than ever due to innovation.

People wish for a sense of belonging as their lives end up being more and more separated interpersonally.

Each of us is trying to source our sense of identity in this significantly disconnected world.

Your years in university would have used you a wonderful look of neighborhood living.
