MUMBAI: Eighty leaders from 26 parties and five chief ministers from opposition-ruled states are set to attend the INDIA alliance meeting in Mumbai on August 31 and September 1.

A meeting of Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) leaders including Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and NCP president Sharad Pawar will take place on Wednesday at the hotel which is to serve as the venue.

Sena (UBT) functionaries said the finer details of the meeting will be decided on Wednesday.

A logo of the INDIA alliance may also be unveiled at the meeting, sources said.Sena (UBT) functionaries said apart from a discussion on drafting a common minimum programme (CMP), discussion on appointing a convenor for the INDIA alliance may also be held during the month-end deliberations.

At the second opposition front meeting in Bengaluru, the 26 opposition parties involved had agreed to a new name for the alliance, INDIA, proposed by Rahul Gandhi.

On Tuesday, a delegation of MVA leaders including MPs Supriya Sule and Anil Desai, MLA Varsha Gaikwad, leader of opposition in the legislative council Ambadas Danve and Sanjay Nirupam, among others, met police commissioner Vivek Phansalkar to discuss security arrangements for the INDIA alliance meeting.

A delegation of MVA leaders will also meet state chief secretary Manoj Saunik and submit a list of VIPs expected to be in the city and request necessary protocol and security arrangements.

The opposition bloc’s first meeting was held in Patna in June and the second in Bengaluru last month.

Uddhav Thackeray will host a dinner for the visiting dignitaries at the venue on August 31.

The next day, the meeting will take place, followed by a press conference, Sena (UBT) functionaries said.

A convenor for the INDIA alliance may be named.

Over the last two weeks, MVA leaders have held several review meetings to finalise the plans.

While the Sena (UBT) is handling most of the logistics for the event, the Sharad Pawar-led group of the NCP is expected to organise the reception of dignitaries.

Uddhav Thackeray, who attended the meeting of opposition parties convened by the Congress in Bengaluru, had hit out at PM Narendra Modi over his “for the family” comment about the opposition bloc, saying the country was their family and they were fighting for it.Uddhav had also said then that people should have no reason to fear as they (opposition parties) were there to fight for them.

“There was a film called ‘Main Hoon Na.’ Just like that ‘Hum Hain Na’ (We are there),” he had said, referring to a Bollywood film.

Uddhav said then that the opposition’s fight was not against one person or party but against their policies and dictatorship.

“We are fighting for Bharat, and we will take the fight forward and we have come together for that,” he had said.
