BENGALURU: Suspecting his wife's fidelity, a 40-year-old man did the most horrific thing: He poured petrol on her face and burnt it.

The incident occurred last Thursday in Bhavaninagar in Banashankari and the woman, Lasya (name changed), has suffered 30% burns on her face and chest.

She is undergoing treatment at Victoria Hospitaland doctors, attending to her, said there is no risk to her life.However, her face will be disfigured.Lasya worked as a helper at a multi-speciality hospital and the accused, Srinivas, is a plumber.

They have two teenage children.Police said Srinivas suspected that Lasya, who works on a shift from 8pm to 8am and stays home during day time, was in a relationship with another man and used to fight with her.Lasya attended work on November 15 and returned home the next morning.

Srinivas had been waiting for her without going to work.

When she entered home, he started questioning her whereabouts the previous night.

Lasya told him that she was at the hospital, but Srinivas countered her stating he had visited the hospital the previous night and ascertained that she had not reported for work.

He accused her of having an extramarital affair and a verbal argument broke out between the two.

Srinivas took a bottle of petrol, splashed it on her and set fire by striking a matchstick.Describing it as a premeditated act, police said Srinivas bought petrol in a used water bottle the same night and the incident happened in front of their daughter.

When Lasya cried for help, Srinivas took a bucket full of water and doused the fire.

He later took her to hospital with the help of the daughter.
