NEW DELHI: External affairs minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday questioned the timing of the BBC documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots, asserting that it was by no methods unintentional .

In a riposte over the controversial BBC series, which was used by opposition parties like Congress to attack PM Modi, Jaishankar stated that much like the expression war by other methods , the documentary is politics by another means .

In a special interview with ANI, Jaishankar said that often, politics of India does not even originate in its borders but rather originates from outside.

I mean, come on, you believe timing is unintentional! Let me tell you one thing - I do not understand if the election season has actually started in India, Delhi or not, but, for sure it has actually started in London, New York, he included, obviously questioning the timing of the series which comes simply a year ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In an indirect reference to the opposition parties, Jaishankar stated that actual politics is being performed seemingly as media by individuals who do not have the guts to come into political field.

We are not discussing simply a documentary or a speech that somebody gave in a European city or a paper modifies someplace-- we are debating, really politics, which is being performed seemingly as media-- there is a phrase war by other means this is politics by another method-- I indicate you will do a hatchet job, you want to do a hatchet job and state this is just another quest for fact which we chose after 20 years to put at this time, he said.Hitting out at the western media predisposition against PM Modi, Jaishankar said the series is an effort to form a really extremist image of India.

I indicate, do you question it? Look who the cheerleaders are.

What is happening is, just like I informed you-- this drip, drip, drip-- how do you shape a very extremist picture of India, of the government, of the BJP, of the Prime Minister.

I suggest, this has been going on for a years, stated Jaishankar. The minister said that the motive behind planting such stories abroad is to further the anti-India agenda. Why dont we see a documentary on 1984 riotsJaishankar wondered if there was no predisposition in the release of the documentary, then why wasnt there a comparable series on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi.

Why suddenly there is a rise of reports and attention and views? I suggest, were some of these things not happening earlier.

Numerous things happened in Delhi in 1984, why do not we see a documentary on that? If that was your issue, you all of a sudden feel one day, I am really humanistic, I should get justice for individuals who have actually been wronged, he said.He stated we must not get fooled by such programs and challenged the propogators to come out in the political field.

This is politics at play by people who do not have the guts to come into the political field.

They want to have that teflon cover stating that I am an NGO, media organisation etc.

They are playing politics, Jaishankar asserted. The BBCs two-part documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots had actually set off a political furore in India.

The documentary was blocked by the government on social networks platforms.(With inputs from ANI)
