NEW DELHI: The Election Commission reported that there was mostly no violence throughout the Tripura assembly elections on Thursday, and migrant Bru voters had the ability to cast their tallies for the first time in many years.

In the ballot cubicle, it appeared that 80% of the eligible citizens were present.

Minor instances of violence which were reported were immediately looked into by regional groups, it said.

For the very first time in several years, Bru migrant citizens were able to exercise their franchise.

Special efforts were made to register citizens from the Bru community.

Some 14,055 qualified Brus were registered in the state in 12 places.

They cast their votes at these places spread out across 4 districts.

A 25-fold increase in seizures totaling up to Rs 44.67 crore was taped this time as against the 2018 assembly elections, when the figure stood at Rs 1.79 crore.

Increased seizures were seen under all heads-- cash, liquor, drugs, precious metals and giveaways.

The EC described a statement of Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar that violence in the past, throughout and after elections is left just in a few states and there is no location for survey violence in a democracy.(With inputs from PTI)
