JORHAT: An enormous fire broke out at a market in Assams Jorhat district late on Thursday, gutting a minimum of 150 stores, authorities stated.

Twenty-five fire tenders were combating the blaze at Chowk Bazaar in the heart of Jorhat town and it was yet to be brought under control, they stated.

The fire, suspected to have actually been brought on by an electrical short circuit at a shop, spread quick in the overloaded market, they added. There were no reports of any casualty as all shops were closed with owners and personnel have actually left for their homes, cops said. Those gutted were mainly fabric and grocery stores, they stated.

Additional fire tenders were brought in to eliminate the destructive blaze from the close-by towns of Titabor and Mariani, and the Golaghat district, authorities said.

The fire tenders were finding it hard to reach the spot due to narrow roadways, residents stated.

The losses, anticipated to encounter crores of rupees, can be established just after the fire was snuffed out, police said.

This is the 2nd event of a significant fire in Jorhat in two months.

A massive fire in December gutted several shops in the Marwari Patty area.
