India

Despite numerous explanations and assurances, even by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself, the farm bills passed on Sunday in the Rajya Sabha have not gone down well with the farmers in the Braj region.Passed without a vote at a time when, according to senior parliamentarian and Left leader Vrinda Karat, the Rajya Sabha TV was not providing a live feed of the House proceedings, the bills are being touted as "anti-farmer" and "capitalist-friendly".Farmers of Agra, Mathura, Etah, Kasganj, and Mainpuri are openly protesting against the bills, with the Congress party trying its best to project a pro-farmer image by participating in these protests.Congress City President Devendra Kumar Chillu said that the Modi and Yogi governments are completely anti-farmer.

The farmers, who are already suffering due to the Covid-19 crisis, have been dealt a triple blow through these three bills, which were passed by flouting all constitutional norms.Chillu said that the BJP, especially Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP CM Yogi Adityanath, are only seeing their own interests in every law that is being passed in the parliament and the UP Assembly.Samajwadi Party city president Wajid Nisar said that not just the farmers, but people from every section of the society have understood the corrupt intentions of PM Modi and Yogi and in the coming elections, "they will face the music".BSP senior leader Kartar Singh Bhartiya told India Today TV that the entire country is fed up with the Narendra Modi government which has failed in every avenue of governance.

"Now, this farm bill is another attempt to destroy the small farmers of India and steal their farmlands in the interest of the corporates.

But the BSP is standing with the farmers and the farm bill will have to be taken back," he said.Criticising the attempts of the Opposition parties to subvert the government by targeting the farm bills, former BJP city president Vijay Shivhare said that the farm bills are in the interest of the farmers.

He said that the Opposition parties are spreading the rumour that the government will stop buying foodgrains on Minimum Support Price (MSP) from the farmers, which was a "complete lie".

The government had merely opened another avenue for the farmers to sell their produce, anywhere in the country.BJP senior leader TN Agarwal voiced a similar opinion and said that the Modi government was pro-poor and pro-farmer.

"The farmers should not be misled by the opposition parties who were merely using the farmers as tools to subvert the Union government," he said.
