NEW DELHI: The defence ministry on Tuesday provided preliminary approval to three indigenous capital acquisition proposals, involving Helina anti-tank guided rockets to arm innovative light helicopters, worth Rs 4,276 crore.The Rajnath Singh-led Defence Acquisitions Council (DAC) also accorded AoN (acceptance of necessity) for procurement of infra-red homing VSHORADS (extremely short range air defence systems) rockets under style and advancement by DRDO at an expense of Rs 1,920 crore In view of the current developments along the northern borders with China, there is a requirement to focus on efficient air defence weapon systems like the VSHORADS that are portable, can be released quickly in rugged surface and maritime domains and neutralise low-altitude aerial risks, a main said.The DAC also accorded AoN for procurement of around 500 Helina anti-tank assisted missiles, launchers and associated assistance devices which will be incorporated on the indigenous advanced light helicopters.
This rocket is a crucial part of weaponisation of ALHs for countering enemy threats.
Its induction will enhance the Armys offending ability, he said.The nod was likewise provided for the procurement of the launchers and fire control systems for the Brahmos supersonic cruise missiles for the Shivalik class of stealth frigates and the next-generation missile vessels (NGMVs) for the Navy.
With their induction, these warships would have boosted ability of performing maritime strike operations, interdicting and ruining opponents warships and merchant vessels, he included.
