BENGALURU: A software engineer with a private firm was arrested on Friday in his home in Bengaluru for his alleged terrorist activities and links with the banned al-Qaida.
In a related development, NIA detained two people in Palghar district of Maharashtra for questioning, sources said.Mohammed Arif, who is in his late 20s and a native of UP, was picked up by sleuths of the Internal Security Division (ISD) in assistance with central agencies, based on a tip-off that he was allegedly in touch with al-Qaida and was active on social media groups that discussed issues related to communal hatred.Arif was produced before a local court and taken into police custody for questioning.
He was working from home, sources said, and his two laptops and mobile phones were seized during his arrest.
He lives with his wife and two children in the city.Arif came to Bengaluru seven years ago and worked in different companies.
“For the past two years, he was actively associated with al-Qaida, and was a participant in various online discussions encouraging terrorist activities,” a source said.Arif allegedly had also planned to visit Iran and Afghanistan to join the Islamic State terror group.
“Messages exchanged by Arif with those in Iran showed that he was planning to visit them in March this year,” a police officer said.
According to Karnataka home minister Araga Jnanendra, there’s “sufficient evidence establishing his links with terrorist outfits in foreign countries”.
