John Sopko, the US Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), has called for the agency to be closed due to the Islamic Emirate'stakeover of the country and the reduction in assistance.Sopko has recommended to the Office of Management and Budget in the White House that SIGAR'soversight operations be ceased on September 30, 2025.In his latest quarterly report, he said that US aid for Afghanistan'sreconstruction has declined by 82% since before the Islamic Emirate came to power.The report also stated that Washington has committed more than $885 million in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan in the fiscal year 2024.The US has assisted a total of $3.3 billion to Afghanistan since the withdrawal of its troops from the country, 73% of which has been allocated for humanitarian operations and 14% for development.The post John Sopko calls for closure of SIGAR agency due to decline in US aid to Afghanistan first appeared on Ariana News.
