The locked up mother of a prominent critic of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov is facing brand-new criminal charges of disrupting the work of a prison, the human rights group Crew Against Torturesaid Monday.Zarema Musaeva, the mom of activist Abubakar Yangulbaev and the other half of a retired federal judge, is serving a five-year prison sentence for scams and attack on a law enforcement officer.
Musaeva, who suffers from chronic diabetes, washospitalized last month with what her legal representative said was important blood sugar. The Crew Against Torture stated Musaeva, 55, faces up to 5 extra years in prison on charges of interrupting the work of a jail.
Musaeva has rejected the charges. An investigator visited Musaeva at a jail in the Chechen town of Argun to question her about supposedly assaulting a jail bailiff who accompanied her during day-to-day journeys to the healthcare facility, according to the NGO.Investigators informed her legal representative Alexander Savin of the charges, however the rights group stated he does not know the details of the new case yet.The European Court of Human Rights had previously ordered Russia to pay damages to Musaeva and her household over her arbitrary arrest, which was widely seen as retribution for the political advocacy of her three kids Abubakar, Baysangur, and Ibragim Yangulbaev who are all singing critics of Kadyrov.Musaeva was strongly detained in the western Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod and by force required to Chechnya in Russias North Caucasus in January 2022.
