TEHRAN - Esteghlal and Sepahan, 2 of Irans most storied football clubs, are set to take on in a highly anticipated match on Thursday in the 15th week of the 2024/25 Irans Persian Gulf Professional League (PGPL).
The match, to be held at in Tehrans Shahr-e Qods Stadium.
A timeless rivalry that always draws enormous crowds and produces intense excitement among fans. While Sepahan currently sit atop the PGPL table with 31 points, Esteghlal find themselves in a more precarious 10th position with 17 points.
The Blues, who were runners-up last season, have struggled this season and are still searching for consistency under new supervisor Pitso Mosimane. The result of this match has significant implications for both groups, along with their competitors.
A triumph for Sepahan would solidify their position at the top of the table, while a win for Esteghlal could offer a much-needed boost to their season.
For Sepahans rivals like Persepolis and Tractor, an Esteghlal win would be ideal, as it would slow down Sepahans momentum.
* A history of intensityThe rivalry in between Esteghlal and Sepahan is among the most extreme in Iranian football.
Throughout the years, these two teams have produced some memorable matches, filled with passion, skill, and drama.
The data tell the story: in 46 historical conferences, Esteghlal have edged out Sepahan with 17 wins to their 16.
* The story of two coachesBoth teams are led by experienced managers.
Esteghlals Pitso Mosimane and Sepahans Patrice Carteron have a history of dealing with each other in African football, with Mosimane holding a small benefit in their head-to-head record.
* Venue controversyThe location for this match has been a topic of much debate.
Initially, it was planned to be held at the Azadi Stadium, but due to continuous renovations, the match was transferred to Shahr-e Qods Stadium.
This choice has produced some controversy, with fans and authorities expressing their dissatisfaction.
