Russias defence ministry on Sunday declared the capture of a village in Ukraines Sumy area in an unusual cross-border advance.
An unit of the North group of forces throughout offending actions freed the village of Basovka in Sumy region, the ministry stated in a statement, using the Russian name for the village of Basivka near the border with Russias Kursk region.Russia in early March claimed the capture of a Sumy area town for the first time since the early days of the war in 2022, stating soldiers had taken Novenke, a few kilometres from Basivka.President Vladimir Putin in March stated that Russian forces had actually crossed the border, with state media reporting that this referred to the Sumy region.But Ukraine said its soldiers were pressing back attempts by little groups of Russian soldiers trying to enter its territory.Ukraines troops installed an incursion into Russias Kursk region last August but Moscow has recently reclaimed much of this area.
