The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock says that based on projections, this year&s wheat harvest will yield an expected 4.9 million metric tons. This is an increase of 13 percent against last year&s harvest, officials said.Officials said this year, 2.14 million hectares of land has been cultivated with wheat & an increase of 6 percent.According to the ministry, wheat that will be harvested this year is a significant increase against harvests in the last few years.
They said the main reason for this was good rains this year. However, vast stretches of agricultural land, including wheat crops, were destroyed over the past month in devastating flash-floods that swept through northern provinces.Officials meanwhile said that while the projected harvest will be significant, there will still be a shortfall of wheat needed in the country.According to them, Afghanistan needs an annual supply of 6.9 million tons in total.
This leaves a shortfall of two million tons for solar year 1403.
