Thirty two stocks on the 50-scrip Nifty index finished the session in the positive zone The Sensex and Nifty snapped a five-session losing streak on Tuesday.
Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) benchmark index Sensex closed 35 points higher at 34,651 while the NSE Nifty settled at 10,536, up 20 points.
Gains in PSU banking, auto and metal stocks pushed the key indices higher.
SBI shares jumped nearly 5 per cent after the bank reported earnings for the January-March quarter.
However, upside were limited as the political situation in Karnataka continued to be fluid.
