4 years after tidy air mission, 'marginal' gain in some cities

INSUBCONTINENT EXCLUSIVE:
NEW DELHI: Four years of the countrys flagship National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) has seen marginal enhancement in air quality of certain
cities in 2015 but most of them continue to breach the safe limitations under the national ambient air quality requirements
The program, suggested for 131 non-attainment cities, has up until now spent over Rs 6,897 crore considering that its launch in January,
2019Different reports analysing hazardous ultra fine particle matters (PM2.5 and PM10), launched on conclusion of 4 years of NCAP on
Tuesday, reveal that the majority of cities in the top 10 most contaminated list of 2022 are from the Indo-Gangetic Plain, showing the
requirement for an airshed technique for much better air pollution management in the region beyond Delhi.Unlike 10 most contaminated cities,
the least polluted 10 cities, on the other hand, represent a more varied part of the nation
The cleanest city with a PM 2.5 concentration of 26.33 ug/m3 is Srinagar whereas Kohima became the cleanest in terms of PM10 concentration
with 26.77 ug/m3 in 2022
Gorakhpur in UP, touted for its air quality management efforts, functions in the cleanest cities list for both PM 2.5 and PM 10
Amongst the least polluted non-attainment cities last year, nine of the 10 cities have, nevertheless, breached the annual permissible limit
of 60 micrograms per cubic meter (ug/m3) for PM 10, indicating the air isnt safe even in the cleanest cities, stated the analysis, done by
not-for earnings organisation, Climate Trends.Delhis PM2.5 levels improved by over 7% in 2022 compared to 2019, but the capital ranked the
most contaminated with a yearly typical PM 2.5 concentration of 99.71 µg/ m3 last year-- more than double of the appropriate limitation
Under National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), the yearly average proposed requirements for PM2.5 is 40 µg/ m3
In regards to PM10 levels, Ghaziabad emerged the most polluted followed by Faridabad and Delhi in 2022
The national capital tape-recorded a yearly typical PM10 concentration of 213.24 µg/ m3 in 2022 against the appropriate limitation of 60
µg/ m3.
