Fresh cracks in Joshimath, locals say escalated by rains

Fresh cracks and subsidence have been reported in Joshimath town, which was already facing gradual sinking of land, with local residents
claiming that the ongoing monsoon season has aggravated the problem
According to local residents, a big crack has come up on the Auli-Joshimath road a few days ago
They added that subsidence was also witnessed on a walking path in Singdhar municipal ward, which had seen multiple cracks in houses earlier
this year.Confirming the new cracks and fresh subsidence, Chamoli district magistrate (DM), Himanshu Khurana, told TOI on Friday, "I have
sent a report to the government regarding the crack on Auli road and subsidence of land in Singdhar ward and sought a fresh geological
investigation to find out the causes."He added that "considering the situation in Joshimath, the district administration is taking the new
developments very seriously and acting on it".According to the district administration, 868 structures in nine municipal wards of Joshimath
town have developed cracks and 181 of them were officially deemed unsafe and put under red zone
Nearly 1,000 families were left displaced and had to be shifted to temporary relief camps across Joshimath.
