The Attorney General has informed the Supreme Court that a series of guidelines have been prepared to eliminate incidents of ragging in
state universities.A fundamental rights petition filed by a student affected by a ragging incident at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura
in 2020 was taken up before a three-member Supreme Court bench consisting of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, and Justices Shiran
universities.Appearing on behalf of the Attorney General, Senior State Counsel Avanthi Perera stated before the court that a series of
guidelines has been prepared to prevent ragging in state universities.The Chief Justice mentioned that the guidelines should be forwarded to
all universities, and any proposed amendments should be incorporated into the final draft.The Chief Justice also ordered that steps be taken
to prepare and file the final draft before the court.The petitioner stated that he sustained severe physical injuries and brain trauma after
a large backhoe tire was rolled down during a ragging incident at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura
As a result, he was hospitalized for nearly three months.However, the petitioner indicated that he has not fully recovered.The petitioner
further requested that the Supreme Court issue a ruling declaring that his basic human rights were violated through this act and that an
order be issued to prepare guidelines to eliminate ragging in universities.
