PALAKKAD: Three sisters drowned in a sprawling pond even as their stunned father looked on helplessly, at Bheemanad near Kottopadam in Mannarkkad on Wednesday.The deceased were identified as Remisha (23), Nashida (26) and Rinshi (18).
Remisha and Nashida are married and had come to their parents' house for Onam festival.The three women had gone to the Kottopadam pond with their father to do laundry and bathe.
Their brother is bedridden after a kidney transplant.
Their mother had donated the kidney to their brother.
As both of them were undergoing treatment, the father was looking after the affairs of the house.It is believed that the tragedy occurred when one of the sisters slipped into the pond and the two others tried to save her.
The father's voice did not come out as he was too shocked to see his children drowning before his eyes, said an eyewitness.The cry of the sisters attracted guest workers working nearby.
They saw the father's desperate attempt to save his children without making a sound.
The guest workers and local residents conducted the rescue operation.
All three were taken out of the water and rushed to a nearby hospital but their lives could not be saved.
The accident was in a pond of about one-and-a-half acres in area.
The pond is in an isolated area, thus delaying the rescue operations.
The bodies of the three women have been shifted to the district hospital for postmortem.
The bodies will be handed over to the relatives after postmortem on Thursday, said police.Youth's body fished out of BharathapuzhaIn another incident, a young man drowned while bathing with friends in Bharathapuzha.
His body was retrieved by the Shoranur fire and rescue services and the district scuba team on Wednesday.The deceased was identified as Jishnu S Nair (23) from Kottayam.
He works in the marketing department of a private Ayurvedic institution in Shoranur.
The accident took place at 7pm on Tuesday while he was taking a bath in Bharathapuzha near Shoranur railway bridge with his friends.
He was accompanied by a group of five members.
