BERHAMPUR: A 28-year-old labourer was arrested on Friday for allegedly murdering his wife and chopping her body into six pieces before disposing them of in the Rushikulya river in Ganjam district on Wednesday night.According to preliminary inquiry, Narayan Muli of Bhagabanpur village allegedly strangled Buli (22) to death following an altercation after she refused to give him her gold chain which he intended to sell and start a small business with the money.
Narayan had married Buli in a temple about three months back, a source said.The gruesome murder came to light after Buli's mother Jhunu Muli, of Jagilipadar village, lodged a police complaint on Thursday against her son-in-law.
Narayan told Buli's parents and the police that his wife had gone missing.
However, during interrogation, Narayan confessed to his crime.
Police, quoting the accused, said he carried her body to the banks of the river and chopped it into six pieces with an axe.
He then dumped the body parts in the river to destroy evidence.
Police have seized the axe.
Ganjam SP Jagmohan Meena said firefighters and locals have launched a search for the body parts.
