LUCKNOW: A tumor in the pituitary gland that made a man exceptionally tall was successfully removed by doctors at Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS).The tumor, which remained unnoticed since childhood, was detected when it started causing vision problems to the man after he reached the age of 23.
The doctors said that the tumor, initially very small, was responsible for more production of growth hormones in the gland. As a result, the man grew to seven feet two inches tall, the second tallest recorded person in UP.The tumor with time grew three times (3.5 cm) of the size of the gland (12mm) itself and was detected when an MRI was done after the man came to RMLIMS with complaints of fatigue, blurred vision and constant headache.
Subsequently, a minimally invasive endoscopic surgery was done on Friday last week through the nose to remove the tumor. The patient was discharged on Thursday after successful recovery.
The surgery was done free under the Ayushman Yojna scheme as the man belonged to a poor farmer family.Patient Seeraj Kumar, a graduate, who helps his farmer father in Hamirpur, told TOI, I am happy and sad at the same time.
Sad to know that my height is because of the abnormality and happy because my vision is improving and my headache has gone.
According to Prof Deepak Singh, head of the neurosurgery department, who carried out the procedure, Seeraj was suffering from a rare condition called hormone-secreting pituitary adenoma with apoplexy, affecting one in every lakh population.
This condition led to excessive secretion of growth hormone in the gland, resulting in constant growth of Kumar, even after he attained adulthood, till date, making him, as per records, the second tallest person in UP after eight feet and one inch tall Dharmendra Singh, a resident of Pratapgarh, said Prof Singh.Once the condition was diagnosed, we decided to conduct the surgery to improve his vision and check further growth of height.
In the three-hour surgery, we reached the gland from the nose through an endoscopic tube with a camera and drilled a hole to remove the tumor, he added. We also published the following articles recentlyFake doctor among 4 held as patient dies after surgery: Delhi PoliceFour individuals, including an imposter posing as a doctor, have been arrested by the Delhi Police in connection with the death of a man who underwent surgery at a clinic in Greater Kailash.

The consumption of lime with betel nut and betel leaves has helped keep the allure of this calcium compound alive.
Limestone, prepared at lime kilns, is used as a pesticide for various crops and is popular among chewers of betel leaf and betel nut in North Karnataka.
However, the younger generation is turning away from this traditional industry, resulting in increased production costs.
