NEW DELHI: Delhi Police has arrested a 19-year-old man from Mumbai for allegedly murdering a woman whom he was to marry and hiding her body in a bag in northeast Delhi's Farsh Bazar.

Investigators suspected that Sultan, who ran an e-commerce delivery and packaging business, was enraged by 23-year-old Shama's interactions with her previous boyfriend. The victim's family alleged that Sultan had tried to mislead them after the murder by saying that he would help them find her and also go to police to file a complaint.

Shama lived with her family in Farsh Bazar and worked at a beauty parlour.

On Sunday evening, police received information about a suspicious bag in a building in Vishwas Nagar, and a woman's body was found stuffed inside.

There were injury marks on her head, and she was strangled with a piece of cloth that was still on her neck.

The murder took place at Sultan's office on Saturday, said police.

"One of his employees found the bag on Sunday and alerted the authorities," they added.

Deputy commissioner of police (Shahdara) Rohit Meena said the accused's phone was switched off, but technical analysis revealed that he was in Mumbai's Mulund.

Several teams formed under additional DCP Rajiv Rawal rushed to Mumbai and apprehended him on Monday.

Sultan told police that he had known Shama for the past two-three years and they were planning to get married.

His family had also visited Shama's house on Saturday to finalise the wedding.

"On the same day, Sultan called her to his office to resolve their differences.

An altercation ensued, resulting in her death," police said.

"He had tied Shama's hands and legs and placed the body in a plastic bag.

He then locked his office, turned off his phone, and fled the scene.

He took a train from New Delhi Railway Station to Mumbai, where his cousin stays.

Sultan told him that he was searching for a job," police said.

A senior officer said that during their argument, Sultan specifically told Shama not to communicate with her former boyfriend.

"To mislead the investigation, Sulan's family had filed his missing complaint," the officer said.

The accused was planning to flee from Mumbai, but was arrested before that by the team of inspector (special staff) Vikas Kumar, police said.Shama's brother said, "When we were unable to locate Shama, we contacted Sultan and asked if she was with him.

He denied, saying he would search for her and file a police complaint.

He requested me to wait till 9pm." When Sultan didn't respond after 9pm, the family approached police.

"We suspect that more people were involved in the crime and he had no intention of marrying her," the brother alleged.
