Chief Justice nominates seven-judge-bench to hear Easter Sunday FR petitions

The Chief Justice has nominated a fuller bench comprising seven judges of the Supreme Court to hear several Fundamental Rights petitions filed over the Easter Sunday attacks. When the nine Fundamental Rights petitions came up before the Supreme Court, Justice Buwaneka Aluwihare announced that the Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya has decided to hear these petitions before a seven-judge-bench on July 12.

PM confirms Muslim Minister resignations

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told Parliament yesterday morning that the letters of resignation of some of the Muslim Ministers, State and Deputy Ministers had already been submitted by then and all the others would follow during the course of the day. He made this observation in Parliament following the statement by MP and ex-minister Rauf Hakeem in connection with press reports claiming that the resignation letters had not been properly submitted.

Interim report of inquiry into the corruption fraud in Govt. handed over to the President

The interim report of the Presidential Commission of inquiry into the alleged acts of corruption, fraud, criminal breach of trust, criminal misappropriation of property, cheating and abuse or misuse of power or authority, state resources and privileges during the period of January 15, 2015 to December 31, 2018 was handed over to President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat, today (06).

Committee to examine females who complained against Dr Shafi

South-west monsoon over the island

South-west monsoon conditions are gradually establishing over the island. Therefore, showery and windy conditions (particularly in the South-western part) are expected to continue. Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Southern, Central, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places elsewhere particularly after 2.00pm.Heavy falls above 100 mm can be expected at some places particularly in Southern and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kaluthara district. Fairly heavy falls above 50mm can be expected at some places in Eastern and Uva Provinces. Fairly strong gusty winds up to 40 kmph are also likely over the country, particularly in the central hilly areas and over southern coastal areas. There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers. General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.
