Navy apprehends 31 persons for engaging in illegal fishing

Naval personnel on board Inshore Patrol Craft attached to the Eastern Naval Command apprehended 31 persons at two separate locations, during their routine patrols.

All Ranks in Army Join ‘Iftar& Ritual

Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army sat together with Officers and Other Ranks of Islamic faith to perform the ‘Iftar& ritual, the breaking of fast at sunset on Friday (31) evening at Wadduwa Laya Beach hotel.

Organized by the Army Muslims' Association, the ritual ‘Iftar& was attended by a large group of Army Officers, spouses and Other Rankers, a practice that has been launched by the Army for the last couple of years with the coordination of the Army Muslims& Association.

Finland has a lot to celebrate.Not only does it have a capital city bursting with gastronomic creativity, the spectacular Northern Lights and Santa Claus's year-round home (plus the reindeer support staff) in Lapland. It's also the happiest country in the world for the second year in a row, according to the latest World Happiness Report. It's followed by Denmark, Norway, Iceland and The Netherlands.The world's happiest country likes ice swimming. Japan came in 58th place (down from 54th), Russia came in 68th place (down from 59th) and China came in 93rd place (down from 86th).People in South Sudan are the most unhappy with their lives, according to the survey of 156 countries, followed by Central African Republic (155), Afghanistan (154), Tanzania (153) and Rwanda (152).Bolstered by population growth, overall world happiness has fallen over the past few years, which has mostly been fueled by a sustained drop in India, which came in 140th place this year (versus 133rd place in 2018). There has also been an increase of negative emotions, which were also measured and include worry, sadness and anger.

CBSL says interest rates cut aimed at spurring growth

The Monetary Board of Sri Lanka's Central Bank has decided to relax monetary policies and reduce policy interest rates aiming to boost economic growth and stabilize inflation at mid-single digit levels, Central Bank Governor Dr. Indrajith Coomaraswamy said. "The Central Bank has decided to reduce the Standing Deposit Facility Rate (SDFR) and the Standing Lending Facility Rate (SLFR) by 50 basis points to 7.50 percent and 8.50 percent respectively. Statutory Reserve Ratio (SRR) remains unchanged at 5.00 percent, Governor Coomaraswamy told the press at CBSL's monetary policy review yesterday. The event was held at Central Bank auditorium, Colombo.

South-west monsoon getting established

South-west monsoon conditions are getting established over the island during next few days (from 03rd June). Therefore, there is high possibility to enhance showery condition in the South-western part of the Island from 03rd June. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Western, Southern, Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces. Several spells of light showers will occur in North-western province. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Uva province and in Batticaloa and Ampara districts after 2.00 p.m. There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers. General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.
