Russian and Belarusian athletes will be able to complete in this years Asian Games despite the intrusion of Ukraine, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) stated on Thursday.The offer follows the International Olympic Committee stated on Wednesday that a return for Russians at the 2024 Paris Games should be more explored despite calls from Ukraine for them to be banned.Russia and Belarus have been sidelined from most Olympic sports for almost a year following the intrusion of Ukraine.
All athletes, despite their nationality or the passport they hold, should be able to compete in sports competitions, the OCA stated in a statement.The OCA echoed the IOC which said on Wednesday that no professional athlete ought to be avoided from competing even if of their passport.
The IOC pledged solidarity with Ukraine but said it was looking for a pathway for Russian and Belarusian athletes to complete at the 2024 Games in Paris.The relocation from Asia offers a possible method for Russian professional athletes to contend in events which act as qualifiers for the Paris Olympics.
Qualifying in some sports is already underway.
