More than 50 firearms have actually been returned in response to the notification requiring civilians to temporarily hand over firearms and ammo provided to them, according to Ministry of Defence sources.
This decision was taken in compliance with the powers vested in the Defence Secretary under Sections 6( 1) and 6( 2) of the Firearms Ordinance Act No.
33 of 1916, allowing the government to takeover firearms momentarily.
The Ministry stated that these guns would be reissued after an evaluation process.The Ministry of Defence notified all licensees to submit their guns and ammo to the Commercial Explosive Firearms and Ammunition Procurement Unit (CEFAP) at the Sri Lanka Navy camp in Welisara before November 7, 2024.
Currently, it has been reported that almost 50 firearms have been returned.
Nevertheless, around 1,650 firearm licenses have actually been provided by the Ministry for various reasons.
The Ministry stressed that all guns and ammunition need to be returned before the defined date, and legal action will be taken versus those who fail to comply, according to the Firearms Ordinance Act No.
33 of 1916.
The Ministry likewise clarified that this policy does not use to guns issued for property/crop defense or sports activities.
