Former Minister Johnston Fernando, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over the ownership of an unlawfully assembled high-end lorry, has been produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrates Court.
Fernando was jailed following his appearance at the CID today (23) to provide a statement concerning an unregistered BMW cars and truck presumably linked to him, which was recently discovered suspiciously parked at a star-class hotel in Colombo.
A petition submitted by Fernando, seeking an order to prevent his arrest over the event, was used up for consideration the other day (22 ).
Throughout the hearing, his lawyers notified the court that Fernando was prepared to appear before the CID today to give a statement on the matter.
The Colombo High Court today likewise provided an arrest warrant on previous parliamentarian Johnston Fernando, for stopping working to appear before the court over a case against him for supposedly including Sathosa workers in election work from 2010 to 2014.
Three persons consisting of the previous minister stand accused of using 153 Lanka Sathosa staff members for political functions, while Fernando was working as the Minister of Co-operatives Internal Trade, resulting in a losses totaling up to Rs.
40 million to the government.
When the case was called previously Colombo High Court judge Manjula Thilakartne today (Oct 23), the arrest warrant was provided as Johnston Fernando stopped working to appear before the court.
His attorney informed the court that his client was at the CID providing a statement regarding the unregistered luxury cars and truck apparently belonging to him, which was found parked at a star-class hotel in Colombo.
