Russia’s ambassador to Guatemala, Vladimir Vinokurov, has confirmed his country’s commitment to enhancing bilateral relations with the Central American nation.In an interview with Sputnik on June 24, the ambassador expressed Russia’s readiness to collaborate with the Guatemalan government.While some areas of cooperation, such as education and scientific exchanges through scholarships and the Russian-Guatemalan Center for Mayan Studies Yury Kurozov, continue to thrive, the ambassador acknowledged that foreign policy did not hold significant prominence in the candidates’ agendas during the electoral campaign.Photo Internet reproduction.However, he commended the broad participation of candidates, particularly noting the increased presence of women.With 9.4 million registered voters, Guatemala is currently preparing to elect its president, vice-president, 160 congressional deputies, 340 mayors, and 20 members of the Central American Parliament (Parlacen) on June 25.In the event that no candidate secures an absolute majority, a second round of elections will take place on August 20, 2023.Prior to the Ukraine conflict, Guatemala had significant commercial exchanges with Russia.As the largest economy in Central America, Guatemala holds strategic importance for both regional and international partners.The Russian ambassador’s remarks signify a positive intent to strengthen ties between the two countries, fostering potential avenues for cooperation and mutual benefits in the future.
