In Ecuador, around 13.4 million citizens are eligible to vote in an urgent runoff election. The government declared a nationwide state of emergency because of a spike in crime and an economic downturn. This election pits Luisa González against Daniel Noboa, who gathered 33.6% and 23.47% of votes in the initial round, respectively.President Guillermo Lasso initiated this election.

He invoked a constitutional clause called “crossed death” to dodge a political trial against him. This extraordinary rule leads to the dissolution of both the Executive and Legislative branches, triggering new elections immediately. For this election, more than 40,000 polling stations will be available.

They will operate from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM local time.Ecuadorians living abroad will cast their votes according to their respective time zones.

These overseas voters will also select 21 members for the National Assembly. For the first time in Ecuador’s history, the candidate lists offer gender parity for the presidential slot.

This is a significant step towards political equality in the country.Ecuador Votes Amid Crisis and Stalled Economy.

On the other hand, it’s optional for those aged 16 to 17, those above 65, and for persons with disabilities.Failure to vote will result in a fine, pegged at 10% of the current basic salary, which stands at $450.Security measures are exceptionally tight, given recent political unrest and attacks.

Over 53,000 police officers and 43,000 military personnel are deployed for election security.Their roles cover guarding the polling stations, ensuring the safety of voters, and protecting candidates.Preliminary election results are expected to be announced by Sunday evening.

The winning candidate pair will assume office on November 25 and will remain in power until May 24, 2025.
